Maternity Session- Sierra and Michael
When Sierra and Michael reached out asking about having a maternity session I was truly overjoyed. Their wedding was derailed by a wild fire and they had to pivot the day before to something that looked very different than what they had planned. They were so gracious and lovely despite everything coming apart around them. Their true character showed through in those moments and I was in awe of their ability to lean on each other and roll with what life had given them. Being able to reconnect and catch up on all that had happened since, under such joyful circumstances was a gift. I always say I have the absolute best couples and families, and these two are a shining example.
Sierra and Michael chose the UC Davis arboretum for their session and I absolutely love how their images turned out. The redwood grove offers the look of being in a forest without actually having to drive to the forest. The light that comes through the trees is gorgeous, and can give a moody etherial vibe if that is what you’re going for, or it can give a nice even look for more traditional style photos. It really is a very versatile location.
Something I always tell my couples is that a maternity session will not feel the same as your engagement session or wedding photos. The main event is your bump, and that can feel a bit awkward at first. But that is ok! Once you know that it is normal for it to feel a little awkward you can move on to enjoying the session. Figure out where it is most comfortable for your partner to touch your belly, the most natural placement for your hands and what poses your body is most comfortable with. It is totally normal for certain positions (like sitting) to feel less natural that others, given you have a whole human growing in your body. Don’t be afraid to speak up and say when something feels uncomfortable or unnatural. The only way to get photos you love is if you have fun taking them.
The number one thing I am most grateful for in my career is that people trust me with these moments in their lives. My couples come back, year after year, putting their faith in me to document these special milestones. I am eternally in awe and grateful and I love you all so so much.
